Rund um Bad Gandersheim > Touristic Attractions > City of Bad Gandersheim

Chronicler Henricus Bodo backdates its construction into the nineth century within a chronicle of the years 1523 til 1532. In the year 1196 St. George's church is mentioned to be a parish church first time.

Until the year 1376 it was the only parish church in Gandersheim. Then the market chirch was built. Ar least during reformation times it lost its significance as parish church when in 1568 the cathedral was opened to all citizens.

The tower is built in romanesque style (12th century), the nave is of gotique style (beginning 1400) and other parts go back to the Renaissance.

The gotique nave is 22 m long and 11,5 m wide. The particularity is the church's situation outside the town's wall.

The classical altar dates to the years 1711 to 1713 and was brought from the Cathedral to the St. George's in 1848.  Das stall (made of wood) goes back to the year 1591. In 1676 it was painted by the Danish painter Magnus Boischuh. The beams of the ceiling and the load bearing posts in front of the chorus room are decorated with ornaments.

The style of painting is baroque -but is totally different to that baroque style which is known from the catholic Southern Germany. It reminiscents more of rural paintings.
